City of Omaha, Nebraska Community Energy Plan

Integrating Energy Planning Across a Midwest City

Brendle Group worked with the City of Omaha, Nebraska on a greenhouse gas inventory and comprehensive energy management plan that also addresses other aspects of sustainability, including integrating sustainability into the City’s comprehensive plan, land use codes and building code. The firm’s work built on the efforts of Environment Omaha, a citizen-led sustainability group facilitated by the Rocky Mountain Institute, to develop an Environment Element for the City’s comprehensive plan.

The Brendle Group team also conducted extensive public outreach to inform the planning process, including a citywide survey on energy and sustainability issues and a number of focus groups to develop goals and strategies for the Plan. The project also included a review of the City’s current codes with respect to energy and sustainability and development of recommended code changes to remove barriers and provide incentives for energy efficiency, renewable energy and other aspects of sustainability.
